The Proper way how to handle fresh flower leis and help them last longer.
A Hawaiian lei is a garland as some call it, or a tight series of flowers strung together with the intent to be worn. A Hawaiian lei is commonly made from various types of flowers and typical examples use Orchid blossoms, Pikake blossoms or Tuberose Flowers and is woven into the shape of a garland or wreath. However there are various types of lei that can use leaves combined with seeds, seashells or other plant materials and is considered Hawaii’s sacred item. In the Hawaiian language the word lei originally comes from ‘nā lei’ which is the plural form. Therefore the proper use of this word is lei for both singular and plural. To make it less confusing on our website we will use Lei(s) for the plural meaning.
The early Polynesian voyagers came to Hawaii by canoe and are thought to have originated from Tahiti. They navigated the ocean by the stars and these Polynesians first started using the Hawaiian lei as an ornament to honor their gods by combining greens into wreaths and strings of flowers and vines.
In this ancient Hawaiian tradition the Hawaiian lei was given as a symbol of honor. In today’s tradition Hawaiian leis are more common a symbol of ALOHA or love. When someone is given a lei, it is a symbol of honor, love and friendship as well as a greeting.
Furthermore, the Hawaiian lei can be used in various aspects such as conveying feelings, denoting social status or celebrating significant events including congratulatory events, appreciation, friendship, birthdays, graduations, love, greeting and also a farewell.
The receiver should bow his or her head down, and let the giver place the flower garland around his neck. When giving a lei the person who is receiving the lei should lower or bow his or her head allowing the person giving the lei to drape it around their neck.
This bowing of the head is also seen as a sign of respect and love for the person giving you the lei.

Once you receive the Lei package, to open the box and spray the leis with a light mist of water. It’ll liven the flowers after their long transit from Hawaii.
Please do not spray dyed leis for the risk of it bleeding onto other leis. It is unlikely but possible.
Place inside a ziplock bag or plastic bag. Seal and place inside refrigerator till event. If you can’t store in a refrigerator, you can keep cool in a cooler with ice.
DO NOT use dry ice. Please have a towel over the ice so the flowers do not have direct contact with the ice because it’ll cause it to wilt. Ideally ice will be in sealed bags. Frozen ice gel packs also work well. Check out our care video here
